Look, I’m Abe, founder of Simple Service Inc. since 2015. I’ve personally cleaned hundreds of facilities, from a small office in Liberty Village to massive industrial sites out near Pearson Airport. And let me tell you, when it comes to finding a good job in Toronto, a university degree isn't always the golden ticket. Real talk: plenty of folks are doing incredibly well here in the GTA without one. What matters more? Your attitude, your work ethic, and your willingness to learn.
Here’s the thing: Toronto's job market is dynamic. It needs skilled trades, service professionals, logistics experts, and more. Companies like mine are always on the lookout for reliable, dedicated people. If you’re willing to roll up your sleeves, show up on time, and take pride in your work, you’ve got a massive advantage.
My Journey: From The Trenches to Founder
I remember back in the early days, when Simple Service Inc. was just getting started. I was often on site myself, cleaning post-construction dust out of a brand-new condo tower in the Distillery District. That dust, man, it’s a beast – especially if it’s been sitting for weeks. No amount of textbook knowledge prepares you for how to properly extract concrete dust from commercial carpeting without damaging it. You learn by doing, by getting your hands dirty, by figuring out how that commercial-grade extractor actually works. That kind of hands-on problem-solving, that's invaluable.
We’ve hired many folks over the years who came to us with zero experience in cleaning, but they had a solid head on their shoulders and a desire to learn. One guy, Mateo, started with us in North York. He’d just arrived in Canada and was keen to work. No degree, just pure grit. We trained him on everything from WHMIS-compliant products to operating floor scrubbers. Within two years, he was a team lead, managing multiple sites. He just needed someone to give him a chance.
What are the best jobs in Toronto without a degree?
Alright, let’s get down to brass tacks. Toronto is booming, and there’s a huge demand for practical skills. You're not just limited to minimum wage gigs, either. Here are some categories where a degree isn't usually a prerequisite, but skills and experience are golden:
Skilled Trades: Think electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, carpenters. These jobs are always in demand, pay really well, and often require college diplomas or apprenticeships, not university degrees. I’ve seen some of our HVAC guys work wonders in older office buildings in the Financial District, fixing up systems that impact air quality – something we even discussed in our post about Toronto Office HVAC & Air Quality. The training programs are solid, and the career path is clear.
Logistics & Warehousing: Toronto, especially areas like Etobicoke and Scarborough, is a hub for logistics. We’re talking forklift operators, general labourers, shipping and receiving clerks, and delivery drivers. Companies need efficient operations, and they
